This web site is best viewed at 1280x1240 pixels and to be able to enjoy the audio/visual and interactive areas of the site you must use a compatible browser i.e. IE.
Navigation is via the two menus bars above. The main menu of page links on the lower, light green band, may take you to pages which may have further page links at the top of the page. If you want to return to this main page, then just click 'home' There may be teething problems at first as I add more pages, and some links on the main bar on new pages, may not work yet. If in doubt return to this page where all the links do work.

What is being said about this web site:
"Your website great and it is really fabulous, as a 70 year old I really appreciate seeing the tour of GC, as i delivered a lot of the concrete to that shopping centre when it was being built, and my Wife Ada & I were often at "Shephards of Gateshead" that was a really great shop & also walking round the centre & indoor market, But it is really fascinating looking at all the old places & the "new" sites along side them, you have done a brilliant job of the GC site, Thank You. We also enjoyed the "Payroll" & "Likely Lads" site as well, i remember watching "Payroll" on the TV, and pulling it to bits as the the continuity of the film, as the Van was going over the bridge before it got there & then down at Wallsend in the next shot! but we still enjoyed them, My Son who is 46,was over the moon when i sent him the link up to GC, as he wanted some photos before it was demolished & now he has them, thanks to your website, as I have loads of "Geordies" families all over the World, this is 1 very good email link they will be getting."

The remnants of Owen Luder's masterpiece shortly to be replaced by a Tesco shed

NEWS...Locals are reporting that rats are running amok now since the demolition began. The car park itself couldn't sustain much animal life but the 'below ground indoor market' could do this is probably where the source of infestation is. Who knows what the traders left behind. Also strange how the local air heads (I don't live in Gateshead brigade but where I live is worse) seem to take an unhealthy interest in destruction (without an informed intelligent view, ie no mention of Owen Luder, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier or indeed Bauhaus in relation to the architecture of the whole car park)  and haven't mentioned other impending demolition plans for the town centre and beyond. A case of ignorance is bliss once again.  What kind of person revels in destruction anyway? Discuss.

I am grateful to Richard Hook for allowing me to display the above photographs on this page

Welcome and Introduction

Welcome to a new Gateshead web site, designed, developed and maintained by Bill Hartmann. The old, and very popular Wardley Colliery & Get Carter Gateshead web sites have been closed and this one 'town' web site replaces them. Unlike many "sanitised" local sites/pages I am quite happy to give you the rough with the smooth side of the town, though if you don't know Gateshead, you may be pleasantly surprised at many of the unknown and pleasant aspects of the borough.
I hope that the site content will revive memories of Gateshead, and that you will like what you see and return again and again. Your feedback is welcome and appreciated. Your memories and photographs of Gateshead would also be very welcome.
It isn't my intention to provide a full history of Gateshead, nor is it practical anyway. The towns history is already covered fully by the Gateshead Library site, the wonderful
Gateshead History web site by John Bratton and the many publications by historian Frank Manders. His  Gateshead history books are available in libraries throughout the borough. I will inevitably touch on history, that is why I have the History Room and Peoples Museum, (where you will find fresh stories and images which are as yet unseen on the internet).
This page will be updated frequently.

Felling Metro Station 2006. The Mulberry PH in the distance is shut and will become flats. The simple and old original bridge to to platforms and Mulberry St. will be replaced by a monstrous metal nightmare.

Bill Hartmann your host.

Did you live in St Cuthbert's Village? Do you remember or did you frequent the Lindisfarne Pub near the  Chandless St Flats?  Did you live in Warwick Court???
If you did, I would like to hear from you.

Remember Terry who managed the Metropole pub and Vivian who managed the Crown in the early1980s???
Can you remember the the little lad who played drums in the band that played in the Lindisfarne pub on Saturday nights??? Talk about it on the Message Board

An Iconic view of S. Mary's Church and the Tyne Bridge

This is from an old postcard of St Mary's Church

Initially I will be focussing on the town centre initially, but I will of course cover all areas of Gateshead which for the purposes of these pages may be identified as:
The Town Centre, Felling, Wrekenton & The Leam, The Fell, Birtley & Lamesley, Lower Team Valley, Whickham, Upper &  Lower Derwent Valley & Ryton
If you have any material you would like to contribute to this site, please contact me by e-mail. Full credit will be given for any item used. Your privacy will be respected too, if you do not wish your name to be used. I will be adding a page shortly giving precise instructions

Unique to this site is my 3D Stereo pages. I will be showing photographs taken around Gateshead in anaglyph form. Anaglyphs are red/cyan images which when viewed through a pair of red/cyan 3d glasses, have depth. I realise few people have these lying about at home (unless you still have yours from the 'Spy Kids' movies) but don't worry I will provide free glasses to anyone who wants them (p&p extra) So if you want to view Gateshead "as if you were there" watch out for these new innovative and unique pages.
(Color anaglyph above left, horses at old Wardley)

The 'OLDIES' jukebox will also return as will some of the vintage radio programs from the forties and fifties we all enjoyed then..

I will be providing a link from this page to my Tyneside Grave Matters web site and my pages of St Mary's Churchyard photographs, including a photograph of every tombstone in the cemetery and stories behind the stones. I will be adding St Albans Church graveyard eventually too to Tyneside Grave Matters.

Copyright Information
Images on this site are watermarked and protected and can be traced if downloaded. Unless stated otherwise they are all 'proof' copyrighted, the originals are available for inspection, either in negative form, print or both. The exception to this are vintage postcards, which are available in the public domain, and there may be thousands in circulation. However I have copyrighted the page to discourage theft. If you want a particular card, buy it, like I did. If you think I may have breached your intellectual rights  in publishing an image, please point out the relevant part of the act I have alleged to have breached, and I will consider what action to take. Do not issue any misjudged and generalised threats regarding the alleged theft of your images (as happened recently on a local web site, when a 'dim' character accused various people of stealing images from his web site) This is a dangerous game and unless you know what you are talking about, as any counter claim would be followed to its ultimate conclusion by me, and could prove to be very, very expensive.
If you steal my images I WILL take you to court

If you desire a copy of any image, just ask. I just may send you one

TinEye instantly finds exact matches of images including those that have been cropped, edited or resized. Pinch my work and I will find you!!!!
